Feedback-land
A well-designed badge system is part of a feedback loop of intrinsic engagement. Intrinsic motivation occurs when one is feels pride in an accomplishment rather than working toward an end reward, or extrinsic motivation, such as a paycheck or a grade. Scroll down to claim your badge!

BONUS:
Sometimes feedback has unintended consequenses. According to The Fifth Discipline, this can occur when a "fix, effective in the short term, has unforeseen long-term consequences which may require even more use of the same fix" (Senge, 2006). The video below is from the documentary Freakonomics, which is based on a book of the same name by economists Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. The clip and recounts an unintended consequence in an incentive feedback loop (go potty to earn M&Ms - what could possibly go wrong!).
