Gamification is when one adds game elements to a nongames. In the classroom, Learning management systems, like ClassCraft and 3DGame Lab, add an adventure-like layer on a course. In ClassCraft, Students create an avatar, "play" as on of a team, or guild, and earn experience points.

Unlike gamification, game-based learning relates to the using of games to support learning. This is nothing new, actually. Educators have used games to teach for years. More recently, though, learning games like those found on Brainpop’s GameUp, provide learning opportunities across curriculum strands. I teach game design and development to middle school students at William Annin Middle School in Basking Ridge, N.J. My course involves games with a focus on students designing their own games.
